Understanding Disabilities
Description
In this course, students will explore and examine the history of developmental disabilities and ethical, socio-political practices, and their impact on individuals living with developmental disabilities. Examination of the various models and theories of disability will result in a better understanding of the disability experience. Students will learn new terminology and concepts that build on ethical responsibilities in the field of disability, specifically developmental disabilities. Based on the medical model, the incidence, prevalence, prevention, etiology, and classification systems will be examined. Upon course completion, the emphasis on a new theoretical lens will provide students with the knowledge and skill to enable appropriate support and empowerment for all individuals living with a disability and their families.
