Dementia & Related Cognitive Disorders

In this course, students will learn about dementia from the perspective of the person living with the disease, as well as family members. Students will learn about dementia in general and Alzheimer Disease specifically since this is the most prevalent of all types of dementia. The Rising Tide: The Impact of Alzheimer Disease in Canada reports that approximately 500,000 Canadians have dementia today. It is the most significant cause of disability among Canadians over age 65. Given that the baby boom generation has started to move into the 65+ demographic, many students will come in contact with somebody who has dementia at some point in their lives. Because the rapidly increasing incidence of dementia has been called an approaching epidemic the need for education in this area is essential for understanding dementia and how to interact with people living with dementia. Since research shows that regular attendance in class has a positive impact on student success, attendance in all classes is expected.
